Eckhard Stohr

  Eckhard Stohr is one of the newer generation of German carvers. He lives in Hamberge a small town near the ancient Hanseatic city, Luebeck. He was 1st inspired to make pipes when he received a Dan Pipe catalogue. He ordered some predrilled blocks. But how to make a pipe, where to begin. what tools do you use. After his 1st efforts he rapidly switched to using Plateau wood and blank stems.

 Over the next 18 years he learned to create his own tools and machinery. For twelve years he got much of his material from Thorkild Midtgaard, a Dane. He never liked Lucite stems or filters. Today he hand selects his briar, always choosing his blocks from the same country of origin, and makes his stems from rods of top quality German ebonite.

 He starts with the block and lets the grain and his eye, as the wood developers, decide where he goes in shaping. Every pipe has meticulous drilling & has a 4mm draught hole. His esthetic is symmetry fused with form follows function. Adornments are exotic tropical woods, horn and sometimes silver.

 His work shows a tremendous ability to read grain in the blocks and his pipe all have outstanding graining. Amazingly, Eckhard's pipe making is still a part time hobby. Consequently his production is less than 60 pipe a year, most of which are sold in Germany. Pipes2smoke is very pleased to be able offer them to the discriminating smoker.
