Jürgen Moritz
Jürgen is one of the newer generation of German pipe makers who are bringing fresh look to pipes. He started collecting pipe when he was 12 years old and hid them under his bend so his mother wouldn't find them. Later, when at university in Dusseldorf he worked part time at a tobacconist and his collection grew. He then worked for many years in an unrelated area.
In 2001 when his daughter, Hannah was born, he thought what if someday she asked, " is there anything you would have done better and different”, at that moment a pipe maker was born. He showed his 1st pipes to the German collector Jörg Lehmann who encouraged him to continue. Cornelius Maenz, another of the younger generation, encouraged him further.
In 2007 he attended his first Chicago pipe show and had his initial success, unfortunately I did not meet him then. Since, September 15, 2007 he has been a full time pfieffenmacher. He makes between 130-150 pipes a year. When I saw his pipes this year I was impressed by the freshness of his shapes along with the finesse and delicacy of his work and felt they deserved a far wider audience. Every pipe is carved from top quality briar with hand cut vulcanite mouthpieces. Each pipe is stamped " J Moritz, Handmade", I am extremely pleased to be able to offer Jürgen's pipes. |
