|Peter Matzhold trained as an architect in Graz, Austria, and worked in his profession for several years. During this time, he began to make a few pipes for his own use. During a visit to Basel, Switzerland, Peter was convinced by a gallery owner to display some of his pipes. Peter was surprised by the success this display had. Peter then decided to see if he could turn his hobby into a living. It turned out to be the right decision. Peter says that in architecture, he spent 10% of his time working, and 90% of it arguing, in pipe making, he spends 90% of his time working and 10% of his time on organization. Peter's pipe-making skills were entirely self-taught and his architectural training had taught him about the proportions of mass, volume and their visual aspects. Success followed gradually. Peter holds fast to his defining principles of pipe design; he only produces pipes with excellent (straight or cross) grain, no fills ever, and clean form follows function lines. Each Matzhold pipe is really a miniature sculpting.|
